Katara, for :iconpuff222001:, in honor of International Blog Against Racism Week.

I've never seen Avatar, nor paid much attention to it, though I knew it was visually impressive. So I had no idea just how awesome this character design was. For the record: pretty freakin' awesome.

(And if you haven't heard about the casting for the live-action movie, go do some Googling. They've hired white people to play all the Asian heroes...and actual Asians to play the bad guys. Yyyyeah.)

(ETA: This video lays it out in detail, with a combination of pointed satire and large friendly letters.)

Oooh, very nice Katara!

I kind of really hate how while the casting for the Avatar movie is getting a lot of outrage, it's also getting a lot of people going, "Oh, you're overreacting! It's just a movie!"

I'm really curious how these same people would've responded if the main cast had originally been black and the characters had then been cast with white actors, because I'm pretty sure they'd have been pissed--as they damn well should. I can't help but see it as though this form of racism is somehow less outrageous to people for some reason, and I hate that. It's still racism!

Really shows you where the line is drawn in terms of Acceptable Targets, doesn't it? Ugh.

Thanks!

I know, right? I just keep thinking about that scene from SWC where Geoffrey is casting the white kids as all the characters in A Raisin In The Sun. (And the black kids all get to be trees!)

That is a pretty awesome character design.

And WTF, guys. That's incredibly messed up casting.

Not to mention that the Fire Nation is supposed to be pale and that's just plain inaccurate. D:<

3. Make her white.
