"From Comedy Central's world news headquarters in Republic City...this is The Daily Show with Jahan!"
Because with its politics heating up the way they are, the Avatar 'verse needs its own fake news team. Even if all they get to host is a radio program.
The names are a combination of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian. I tried to line them up with the ethnicities used for different nations in-universe, but mostly I chose them based on how similar they sounded to the originals. (Stephen and Larry were hardest to find names for.)
Panel borders indicate ethnicity. A different border on the nameplate means the character is bi-ethnic. Each one has a different way of navigating the clashes of culture and identity that this brings up.
Jon could maybe bend a little water if you asked nicely. "Stephen" wishes he could firebend, but no such luck; he's stuck with earth. Kristen is an actual firebender, and the subject of his deep unending envy.
I'd like to do something like that, but first I'd want to sit down and re-derive all my early expectations and theories about the subtleties of A:tLK politics, in order to get my head away from the simplistic watered-down version that was eventually revealed >_>
Stephen as an Earth Bender who wants to bend fire is hilarious. Especially in this he'd be in love with a water bender. Would O'Reilly be an Air Bender, then?
